Distribution of free textbooks amongst students of government schools in Punjab is one of the major activities of Punjab Education Sector Reforms Programme (PESRP). The activity of provision of free textbooks was initiated in 2004 under PMIU-PESRP. Initially the free textbooks were distributed only at primary level but later due to its success, the activity was vertically expanded to middle and high school levels as well. Free textbooks are provided at 132 tehsil warehouses across the Punjab, under the jurisdiction of concerned Chief Executive Officer (DEA) .
Currently, PMIU-PESRP has been providing free textbooks for all students of Class Kachi to Class X of public sector schools in the Punjab. Besides free textbooks, PMIU-PESRP has been providing Tajweedi Qaida, Quranic Paras, Translation of Holy Quran, Practical Notebooks of subject Physics, Chemistry, Biology, & Computer Science for students of Class IX & X for High/Higher Secondary schools in the Punjab.
For the current academic session 2023-24, PMIU-PESRP has been providing 51.06 million free textbooks including Tajweedi Qaida, Paras, and Translation of Holy Quran from Class Kachi to Class-X.
